Database Market Share

Databases are a very practical and useful subject. Before studying it, we need to know its trend. Otherwise, we may study obsolete technologies.

Market Share of Database Management Systems (DBMSs)
The DBMS industry offers diverse technologies such as ORDBMS (object-relational), RDBMS (relational), XDBMS (XML), NoSQL, etc. The market share of DBMSs is usually confidential, so may not be reliable.

The instructor believes the NoSQL share is not that high. It may be because the data centers like Google use many NoSQL databases. Nevertheless, relational databases are still by far the most popular databases in 2021.

Market Share of Open-Source Databases

MySQL remains on top as the #1 free and open source database, representing over 30% of open source database use. This comes as no surprise, as MySQL has held this position consistently for many years according to DB-Engines.

In addition, NoSQL is usually associated with Apache Hadoop framework, which allows for the distributed storage and processing of large datasets across clusters of computers using simple programming models.
