Three Kinds of Computers

Different applications have different hardware design requirements and employ the core hardware technologies in different ways.

There are three kinds of computers used in three different classes of applications: (i) personal computers, (ii) servers, and (iii) embedded computers.

Personal Computers (PCs)
A PC is designed for use by an individual, usually incorporating a graphics display, a keyboard, speakers, and a mouse.

Servers
A server is used for running larger programs for multiple users, often simultaneously, and typically accessed only via a network. Servers span the widest range in cost and capability. At the low end, a server may be a personal computer, and at the other extreme it could be a supercomputer.
